Water treatment FAQ
Do I need a water softener or a filter?
They solve different problems. A softener removes hardness — the cause of scale, dull laundry and no lather. A filter targets a specific issue like iron, a sulfur smell, or drinking-water taste. Many homes benefit from both, and the free water test tells us exactly which you need.
Will softened water taste salty?
No. A softener uses a small amount of sodium to swap out the hardness minerals — it doesn’t make your water taste salty. If you’re watching sodium, we can set up a potassium option or add a reverse-osmosis tap just for drinking water.
How much salt will it use?
It depends on your water hardness and household size, but most families add a bag every few weeks. We size the system to keep salt use efficient.
How long does a system last?
A quality softener typically runs 10–15 years, and often longer with maintenance. When the control valve eventually wears out, we can usually rebuild or reprogram it rather than replace the whole unit.
I’m on city water — do I still need treatment?
Often, yes. City water is treated for safety but can still be hard, and many people add a drinking-water filter for taste and to reduce chlorine. A quick test will tell you for sure.
How often should I test my well water?
At least once a year, and any time you notice a change in taste, smell, color or staining. We’ll test it as part of your free consultation.
